It’s not all about the short game. Five members of the Eckerd Tritons men’s golf team just got tapped as GCAA All-America Scholars for keeping it together in the classroom while chasing birdies.
Usually, when we’re talking about collegiate golf, we’re obsessing over fairways hit and putts dropped. But the latest news out of the Eckerd Athletics department reminds us that the Tritons actually have to, you know, attend class between rounds.
Five members of the Eckerd men’s golf squad were officially named GCAA/Cobalt Golf All-America Scholars. For those not in the loop, this isn’t a participation trophy. To land on this list, you have to be a sophomore, junior, or senior academically, maintain a stroke average under 78.0, and keep a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2.
Shout out to the brainiacs who made the cut: Josh DiZinno, Thayne Thomas, Reggie Fear, Tyler Van Dusen, and Drew Campbell.
It’s one thing to stay calm over a 15-foot par putt at the St. Petersburg Country Club; it’s another to keep that same energy during finals week while juggling a travel schedule. These five managed to do both. While most of us were probably struggling to find our ball in the mangroves, these guys were busy balancing the books and the scorecard.
It’s a solid look for the Tritons, proving that the squad at South Beach (the St. Pete version, obviously) is doing more than just working on their tan.
Congrats to the boys for showing the rest of the Sunshine State Conference how to grind on and off the grass.
