Rowdies bring the noise at Al Lang

Birmingham brought the ball. The Tampa Bay Rowdies brought the damage.

On a beautiful night under the lights at Al Lang, Tampa Bay handed Birmingham Legion FC a 4-0 defeat that left very little room for debate. No need to squint at the statistics or assemble a committee. The Rowdies scored twice before halftime, added twice more afterward and kept the visitors off the scoreboard.

That is a satisfying evening in green and gold, whether you were in the St Pete crowd or watching with fellow fans in Clearwater, Dunedin or out on the beaches. Around a tailgate, this is the kind of result that keeps the conversation on soccer instead of how long it took everybody to get there.

The best part? Tampa Bay didn’t need to monopolize possession to run the evening. Birmingham could have the longer turn with the ball. The Rowdies had better plans for theirs.

Possession is not a participation trophy

Birmingham finished with 55.1% possession to Tampa Bay’s 44.9%. Usually, that gives somebody enough ammunition to argue that the losing side controlled the game.

Not this time. Put the possession chart next to the score and let them sort it out.

The Rowdies made their attacking work count, building a 2-0 halftime lead while keeping Birmingham’s shooting largely harmless. The visitors finished with 17 attempts, but only 1 reached the target. That is plenty of activity without much actual trouble for the goalkeeper.

Tampa Bay, meanwhile, put 6 of its 14 shots on target and finished with 4 goals. The difference wasn’t who looked busier. It was who made the other side pay.

The second goal before halftime gave the Rowdies a firm grip on the match. Rather than let Birmingham turn the second half into an argument, Tampa Bay added another two goals and closed it out with a clean sheet. The visitors also held a 7-6 edge in corners. Another statistical advantage, another empty pocket.

Locadia supplies the pressure

Jürgen Locadia gets the nod as the standout here, with 4 total shots and an attacking presence that kept Birmingham’s defense occupied. This wasn’t a night when Tampa Bay needed decorative touches. It needed pressure and purpose, and Locadia supplied both.

That distinction matters: his shot total tells us he was involved, not that he scored every goal or personally dismantled the entire back line. The Rowdies’ attacking success was a collective job, with Locadia helping drive it.

At the other end, Jahmali Waite made 1 save to preserve the shutout. A goalkeeper’s workload does not have to be enormous for his contribution to matter. When the required stop arrived, he made it.

Credit the defending in front of him, too. Holding Birmingham to a single shot on target from all those attempts helped make the clean sheet possible. The Rowdies also committed 17 fouls to the Legion’s 7. This was not an evening of polite invitations.

A 4-0 home victory earns some noise. It does not require a championship prediction scribbled on a cocktail napkin.

What Tampa Bay delivered was convincing enough without the extra sales pitch: sharp attacking, a commanding halftime lead and a shutout to finish the job. For Pinellas fans, that is plenty to enjoy before attention shifts to the next match on the official schedule.

Birmingham won the possession argument. The Rowdies won the one worth having.
