The Tritons prove they’re just as dangerous with a textbook as they are with a bat, landing 14 players on the NFCA Scholar-Athlete list.
It’s easy to get caught up in the dirt, the heat, and the grind of a Sunshine State Conference season, but the Eckerd College softball team just reminded everyone that they aren’t just athletes who happen to go to class. They’re actual scholars who happen to throw heat.
The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) dropped their academic honors this week, and the Tritons showed out in a big way. The squad officially earned the NFCA Team Academic Award, which isn't just a participation trophy—it means the collective GPA was high enough to make most of us feel slightly insecure about our own college transcripts.
But the real flex? Fourteen individual Tritons were named NFCA Scholar-Athletes. To pull that off, you have to maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher while balancing road trips, doubleheaders, and the general chaos of being a student-athlete at a school where the campus literally looks like a resort.
While we love a walk-off home run as much as the next local, there’s something genuinely cool about seeing a team dominate the books while representing St. Pete on the national stage. It’s one thing to handle a rise ball; it’s another to handle a full course load and a 3.5 GPA at the same time.
Shoutout to the 14 players who made the cut. We’ll see you at the Turley Athletic Complex, but for now, enjoy the bragging rights in the library.
