The Dunedin Blue Jays left Clearwater with a 6-3 win over the Tampa Tarpons and a useful reminder: breathing room is something you earn, not something the other dugout hands over with the lineup card.

This one started quietly, tightened up late and finally tilted firmly toward Dunedin in the eighth. Aldo Gaxiola supplied the spark. RJ Schreck supplied the solo-homer punctuation. The pitching staff supplied enough strikeouts to keep Tampa from turning a close game into a long argument.

For Pinellas fans watching in St Pete, Clearwater, Dunedin or out at the beaches, this was a satisfying kind of baseball. Not spotless. Not a runaway. Just timely swings and a staff that made the Tarpons work. The sort of recap worth bringing to the next tailgate, rather than burying beneath the chips.

Quiet early, loud when it counted

Neither side scored through the first three innings. Then Gaxiola interrupted the silence in the fourth with a double to center that brought Schreck home. Ryan Cooney followed with a single to right, scoring Gaxiola for a 2-0 Dunedin lead.

Nothing especially mysterious about that formula: get a runner aboard, find a gap, keep the line moving. Baseball occasionally likes to dress itself up as advanced mathematics. This part was refreshingly straightforward.

Tampa got a run back in the fifth. Dunedin answered in the seventh, when Brayden Martin singled to bring Cooney home and make it 3-1. Luke Pettitte’s solo homer in the bottom of the inning trimmed that advantage to 3-2.

So much for getting comfortable. The Tarpons were close enough to make every pitch feel a little heavier.

The Blue Jays responded with a three-run eighth. Schreck launched his first homer of the season, and Dunedin finished the inning ahead 6-2. That was the separation the game had been missing: a slim lead became something the Jays could defend without living on the edge of the bar stool.

Luis Escudero hit a solo homer for Tampa in the ninth. It changed the final score, not the ending. Dunedin took it 6-3.

Gaxiola earns the conversation

Gaxiola finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. His fourth-inning double started the scoring, and his night gave the Blue Jays more than a single highlight to admire on the way out.

He gets the headline because he earned it. No need to turn a good game into a prophecy about the entire season. Three hits and a hand in getting the offense moving are plenty to toast.

The pitching deserves its share of the conversation, too. Dunedin’s staff struck out 12 and issued only two walks. That is a much better way to protect a lead than providing complimentary traffic on the bases.

Tampa still landed its punches, including two solo homers. But the Jays paired productive hitting with enough control on the mound to keep those swings from deciding the night.
